JUDAS’S BETRAYAL OF JESUS
47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. A large mob with swords and clubs was with him from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 His betrayer had given them a sign: “The one I kiss, he’s the one; arrest him.” 49 So immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi! ” and kissed him.

50 “Friend,” Jesus asked him,“why have you come? ”

Then they came up, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him. 51 At that moment one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword. He struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his ear.

52 Then Jesus told him,“Put your sword back in its place because all who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and he will provide me here and now with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way? ”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds,“Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me? JUDAS’S BETRAYAL OF JESUS
43 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. 48 Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

Luke 22:47–53;

JUDAS’S BETRAYAL OF JESUS
47 While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him,“Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? ”

49 When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword? ” 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus responded,“No more of this! ” And touching his ear, he healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him,“Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 53 Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. John 18:2–12

2 Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas took a company of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him, went out and said to them,“Who is it that you’re seeking? ”

5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.

“I am he,” Jesus told them.

Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them. 6 When Jesus told them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.

7 Then he asked them again,“Who is it that you’re seeking? ”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

8 “I told you I am he,” Jesus replied.“So if you’re looking for me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the words he had said:“I have not lost one of those you have given me.”

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 At that, Jesus said to Peter,“Put your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me? ”

JESUS ARRESTED AND TAKEN TO ANNAS

JESUS FACES THE SANHEDRIN
57 Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death, 60 but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forward 61 stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ”

62 The high priest stood up and said to him, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you? ” 63 But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

64 “You have said it,” Jesus told him.“But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy. 66 What is your decision? ”

They answered, “He deserves death! ” 67 Then they spat in his face and beat him; others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who was it that hit you? ” -- Matthew 26:57, 59-68 (CSB)

Mark 14:53, 55–65;

JESUS FACES THE SANHEDRIN
53 They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled.

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they could not find any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, stating, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ” 59 Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you? ” 61 But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One? ”

62 “I am,” said Jesus,“and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What is your decision? ” They all condemned him as deserving death.

Luke 22:63–71

JESUS MOCKED AND BEATEN
63 The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. 64 After blindfolding him, they kept asking, “Prophesy! Who was it that hit you? ” 65 And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him.

JESUS FACES THE SANHEDRIN
66 When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin. 67 They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.”

But he said to them,“If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

70 They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God? ”

And he said to them,“You say that I am.”

As predicted, Peter denies Jesus and the rooster crows

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl approached him and said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”

70 But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene! ”

72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I don’t know the man! ”

73 After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, “I don’t know the man! ” Immediately a rooster crowed, 75 and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken,“Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. -- Matthew 26:69-75 (CSB)

66 While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”

68 But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.

69 When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”

70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.”

71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about! ”

72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him,“Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept. -- Mark 14:66-72 (CSB)


Luke 22:54b–62;

54b Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance. 55 They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with him too.”

57 But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know him.”

58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too.”

“Man, I am not! ” Peter said.

59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about! ” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. John 18:15–18, 25–27

PETER DENIES JESUS
15 Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. 16 But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

17 Then the servant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you? ”

“I am not,” he said. 18 Now the servants and the officials had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself. -- John 18:15-18 (CSB)

PETER DENIES JESUS TWICE MORE
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you? ”

He denied it and said, “I am not.”

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden? ” 27 Peter denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed. -- John 18:25-27 (CSB)


After sunrise on Friday the final consultation of the full Sanhedrin condemns Jesus to death and sends him to Pontius Pilate

JESUS FACES PILATE

Judas changes his mind, returns the silver, and hangs himself
Matt. 27:3–10

JUDAS HANGS HIMSELF
3 Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. 4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.

“What’s that to us? ” they said. “See to it yourself! ” 5 So he threw the silver into the temple and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

6 The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners. 8 Therefore that field has been called “Field of Blood” to this day. 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites, 10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me. -- Matthew 27:3-10 (CSB)


Pilate questions Jesus and sends him to Herod Antipas

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. “Are you the king of the Jews? ” the governor asked him.

Jesus answered,“You say so.” 12 While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn’t answer.

2 So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He answered him,“You say so.”

Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate.
2 They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

3 So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He answered him,“You say so.”

4 Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds for charging this man.”

5 But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here.”

JESUS FACES HEROD ANTIPAS
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean. 7 Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days. -- Luke 23:1-7 (CSB)

John 18:28–38

JESUS BEFORE PILATE
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.

29 So Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man? ”

30 They answered him, “If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate told them, “You take him and judge him according to your law.”

“It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared. 32 They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.

33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

34 Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me? ”

35 “I’m not a Jew, am I? ” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done? ”

36 “My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus.“If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

37 “You are a king then? ” Pilate asked.

“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied.“I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Herod questions Jesus and sends him back to Pilate
Luke 23:8–12

8 Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him. 9 So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate. 12 That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Jesus appears before Pilate a second time and is condemned to die

15 At the festival the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you ​— ​Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? ” 18 For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.

19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of him.”

20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you? ”

“Barabbas! ” they answered.

22 Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? ”

They all answered, “Crucify him! ”

23 Then he said, “Why? What has he done wrong? ”

But they kept shouting all the more, “Crucify him! ”

24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves! ”

25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children! ” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified. -- Matthew 27:15-26 (CSB)

Mark 15:6–15;

14 Pilate said to them, “Why? What has he done wrong? ”

But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him! ”

Luke 23:13–25;

JESUS OR BARABBAS
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, 14 and said to them, “You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of. 15 Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him.”

18 Then they all cried out together, “Take this man away! Release Barabbas to us! ” 19 (He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again, 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify! Crucify him! ”

22 A third time he said to them, “Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him.”

23 But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified, and their voices won out. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand 25 and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. John 18:38b–19:16

JESUS OR BARABBAS
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging him. 39 You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? ”

40 They shouted back, “Not this man, but Barabbas! ” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

CHAPTER 19
JESUS FLOGGED AND MOCKED
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
2 The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe. 3 And they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews! ” and were slapping his face.

4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.” 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man! ”

PILATE SENTENCES JESUS TO DEATH
6 When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify! ”

Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”

7 “We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from? ” But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you? ”

11 “You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him,“if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar! ”

13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic, 'Gabbatha'). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king! ”

15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him! ”

Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king? ”

“We have no king but Caesar! ” the chief priests answered.

Jesus is mocked and marched to Golgotha

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company around him. 28 They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe. 29 They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him: “Hail, king of the Jews! ” 30 Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head. 31 After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

CRUCIFIED BETWEEN TWO CRIMINALS
32 As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross. 33 When they came to a place called 'Golgotha' (which means Place of the Skull), 34 they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink. Mark 15:16–23;

MOCKED BY THE MILITARY
16 The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor’s residence ) and called the whole company together. 17 They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, king of the Jews! ” 19 They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage. 20 After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him.

CRUCIFIED BETWEEN TWO CRIMINALS
They led him out to crucify him. 21 They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’s cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

26 As they led him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. 27 A large crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting him. 28 But turning to them, Jesus said,“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children. 29 Look, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the women without children, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed! ’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us! ’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us! ’ 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? ”

CRUCIFIED BETWEEN TWO CRIMINALS
32 Two others ​— ​criminals ​— ​were also led away to be executed with him. 33 When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots.

35 The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: “He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One! ” 36 The soldiers also mocked him. They came offering him sour wine 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself! ”

38 An inscription was above him: This Is theKing of the J ews.

39 Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us! ”

40 But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? 41 We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43 And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS

JESUS’S SIDE PIERCED
31 Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. JESUS’S BURIAL
